Random Disappearing Nine Patch
This is a Disappearing Nine-Patch pattern in a very random and scrappy layout. Out of the 441 squares needed to start the quilt, only a few are repeated and used more than once. The way this pattern goes together, the fabrics repeat in some places but only 4 times for 49 fabrics. Otherwise, nearly all the fabrics are different.Pieced, quilted, binding on, and washed.Gold variegated King Tut thread by Superior Threads. With all the squares and rectangles on the piecing, I quilted circles with hooked feathers randomly as I went along the quilt.
Eventually, an online blog by Helen Bailey, featured a tutorial about her own use of the disappearing nine patch but she referred to it by a different name. The same technique has been called Tossed Nine Patch (by Eleanor Burns) and (possibly) 9 to 4 by other quilters and authors. Aug 30, 2011 Hi Friends! Since I snapped a few pics along the way of my improved disappearing nine patch quilt for my little girl, I thought I’d throw together a quick little tutorial for anyone interested in this super easy, versatile block. SCROLL DOWN AND SEE THE VIDEO TUTORIAL “The Disappearing 9 Patch” Beginners should try to focus only on the basics when making the Quilt. It starts with cutting 5″ wide strips, or if you choose you can use a charm pack made up of 5″ squares or purchase what is commonly called double wide Jelly Roll that are 5 inch wide strips.
Then I filled in the other areas with loops and spirals. One circle has a script L for the customer. I don’t know if she’s found that yet!Ready to be shipped and loved! Just the blocks laid out on my floor for arranging. It is a planned Disappearing Nine-Patch pattern in that I purposely arranged the 9-patch units so that my dark purples would be the trail going through the quilt diagonally and the white with black fabrics would be the rectangles. (The purple for my friend and the more predominately white fabrics in smaller pieces since she has kids. 🙂 )All quilted, binding on, and washed for presentation. The backing is pieced too for extra fun!I think labels are super important! Sometimes I put the label on before quilting and sometimes afterwards. If you have it on the backing already, please be sure to alert me when you bring the quilt in for finishing.Personal delivery the best!
🙂I wish I could see her more often.
